Busy Meeting Celebrates Past Projects and The History of a Local School

February 27, 2014 by Tim Ernst Leave a Comment

John Hayden from Antonelli Institute was the speaker recently at a Rotary Club Meeting where he explained the Institute is celebrating 75 years of history teaching students the visual arts. Below is Club President George Schaefer and John Hayden. The Rotarians also presented a check for $1000.00 to Face to Face, a local facility and organization that offers a Dining Room, a nurse managed Health Center, a Legal Center, a Social Services Center and Children’s Summer Camps and After School programs.  We also have a Washeteria where people can take a hot shower and receive a new set of clothes.  Face to Face serves 2,500 annually and has been a stable presence in Germantown for over 20 years. They also recognized Honorary Rotarian Joe Bonus for always being willing to help in Rotary Projects.

More Information:

The club recognized Bob Ryan for donating the chicken for the MLK Day lunch at Face to Face. Because of the efforts of Mike Creeden from Sandy Run Country Club, most of the food for the luncheon was donated. This freed up the money that the club allocated for the luncheon to be able to present a $1,000 check to Face to Face. Additionally, the club was able to donated 2,000 toiletry items for the washeteria.

Because of his monumental work on the Springfield Rotary projects over the past years, the Rotary Club presented an Honorary Membership to Joe Bonus.

Program: John Hayden, Director of the Antonelli School of Photography located in Springfield Township presented information about the school, its programs and most of all, its successful alumni. The school was founded in 1938 by Severo Antonelli. His work is exhibited in the Woodmere Art Museum. The school is accredited by the Association of Career Schools and Colleges and authorized to award Associate Degrees. Its distinguished alumni include those whose works have been featured on Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine and National Geographic to name just a few. The school motto is “Develop Passion-Design the Future.”

Temple Athletics Representative Speaks with Rotary

February 2, 2014 by Tim Ernst Leave a Comment

Springfield Township Rotarians welcomed Kristian Graves the Director of Capital Support for Temple Athletics. Mr. Graves touched on Temples revolution in the last 20 years, the expansion of its Fox School of Business, new Science and Technology Building, and the transition of the Tyler School of Arts to the main campus. Temple is unusual in that a majority of its student population live nearby to campus. While Temple has a 95 acre campus it pales to the next closest college in its league in Connecticut with 3,100 acres. This ties into Temples decision to cut 7 athletic teams from Temples athletic programs, the school felt they did not have the space or facilities to properly accommodate the sports. For example, the baseball team would have to travel hours to Temples Ambler campus, hold practice and then commute back. The main campus simple did not have the room to support a baseball field. The decision was not taken lightly and all students on athletic scholarships for the cut programs will have their scholarships honored.

Rotary welcomed Wendy Souders from the Green Dot Moms today to Rotary. The Green Dot Moms are a closed group of Facebook mother’s supporting each other while their children are deployed abroad. They have been sending care packages to their children’s unit if only to bring smiles to their children’s faces and for them to know they are loved and people back home care and are thinking of them. The Souders Family also is instrumental in maintaining the Flourtown Erdenheim War Memorial on Bethlehem Pike, which the Rotary Club just completed a $20,000 renovation on last year. Today, Rotary Club President George Schaefer presented Mrs. Souders a check for $250 to help defray the shipping costs of the care packages. We love our troops and the Rotary Club will always support you! Pictured Left to Right, Pres. George Schaefer and Wendy Souders of the Green Dot Moms.
