Springfield Rotary Honors Two of its Members

August 23, 2017 by Tim Ernst Leave a Comment

George Struzyna just celebrated his 40th Anniversary as a Rotarian. George was a survivor of World War II and came to the United States and became a very proud United States Citizen. He has been a member of 2 other clubs prior to finding his home here at Springfield Township Rotary Club.

The second image pictures Rotary Foundation Chair Maureen McGettigan honoring fellow Rotarian Claudia Campbell with her second Paul Harris Fellow Pin. The Paul Harris Fellow is one of Rotary’s highest honors.

Charter Member Rotary Bell Returns to Springfield Club

October 15, 2011 by Tim Ernst 2 Comments

“Oh if that bell could talk,” stated Rotarian Frank Duff on examining a brass bell at a the Club’s Board meeting. The bell was recently returned to the club, no one had seen it since the late 1950s or early sixties when it was created to honor the Charter Members of the Rotary Club of Springfield Township. The club was chartered in 1957.

Where the bell has been and how it came to be back in the club’s possession is an interesting story. Using the Contact Our Rotary Club link on this website, Anna Maye Sigel an Inactive member of the Hancock, MD Rotary Club, reached out to ask if we’d be interested in getting a brass bell with the names of our Charter Members back? Club President Roseann Nyiri answered Anna Maye and said she’d love to get the bell back. It seems Anna Maye’s brother frequents yard sales and flea markets found the bell. When he saw it was “Rotarian” he passed it along to his sister. She did some research and narrowed it down to our club. Anna Maye went out of her way to package up the bell and ship it from Walfordsburg, PA to Roseann. Anna Maye may be inactive, but she’s truly a Rotarian at heart. Thank you Anna Maye!

The Bell lists all the Charter Members of the Springfield Rotary Club. As of October 2011, Walter S. King and Robert L. Mohr remain the only living Charter Members of our Club.

Membership Night A Rousing Success!

September 28, 2011 by Tim Ernst Leave a Comment

Springfield Rotary gathered at the Flourtown Country Club to hold a membership night, past Rotarian and potential new ones were invited to participate in a special Rotary Meeting. The highlights of meeting outside the cocktail hour included Rotarians giving brief summaries of all Rotary has to offer, locally, regionally, and internationally. The Water Tower project in Tanzania and the hospital build in Belize were featured as international projects along with Rotary’s Polio Plus campaign to eradicate the disease throughout the world. The township banners, gazebo and park beautification and war memorial projects were cited as local projects benefitting the Springfield Township community. Hunger, housing and other projects were also discussed for the regional level. Past, present and hopefully future Rotarians all left this special evening arranged through the hard work of Rotarian Mandy Helwig (who arranged for the space, developed the speakers, and accompanying slide presentation, and invited everyone) feeling good about all the good Rotary does throughout the world.
