Day of Service Brings Out Community and Rotarians the Honor MLK, Jr.

January 23, 2014 by Tim Ernst Leave a Comment

The Rotary Club of Springfield Township inspired others to lend a hand in honor of Martin Luther King and a national day of service to others. The Rotary ran a two fold campaign using mostly Facebook to spread the word. The first part of the fundraiser was to collect toiletry items for the “Washeteria” at Face to Face Shelter in Germantown. The “Washeteria” allows people to come in and shower and wash their clothing in a dignified manner. Most of the participants are homeless war veterans. Numerous donations poured into Dan Helwig Realtors in Flourtown who offered to be a drop off location on behalf of Rotary. Tthe Springfield Democrats picked up on the news feed and held their own collection to contribute. All in all, thru Rotary and the combined efforts and donations of others who found out about the fundraiser on Facebook, 2000 Toiletries were collected and donated. The second half of the project was to collect money to pay for 200 meals on MLK Day at Face to Face. When last years restaurant vendor bowed out due to increased costs of chicken, Sandy Run Country Club stepped up. Mike Creeden, Manager at Sandy Run, was able to get most of the vegetables and chicken donated for free and his staff at Sandy Run prepared the 200 meals at no cost. Because of Sandy Run’s generosity there is a surplus of over $750 which will be donated to Face to Face as a monetary contribution to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the facility. On MLK Day, Rotarians and other volunteers served 200 grateful people at Face to Face who enjoyed an amazing and nutritious meal. Though MLK Day comes but once a year, Rotarians keep service in their hearts all year long living by and spreading their motto “service above self”. The community recognized their Facebook call to actions and the response was nothing less than extraordinary.

Young players in the Pacific Rim and Latin America play the game with as much joy and success as kids in North America. Everywhere baseball is played, it becomes an important part of the culture and teaches kids many important lessons, like teamwork and sportsmanship. It also gives kids the chance to be active, get fit and have fun.

That’s Pitch in for Baseball’s Mission: to help kids and make friends all over the world by sharing the great game of baseball. The organization collects and donates baseball equipment and other assistance to young people in underserved communities around the globe. Donations of equipment and money are tax deductible.

The organization began after hearing about the efforts of Bill Piszek and his work to share the game with needy kids in Poland. Piszek is a member of the Springfield Rotary Club.

Interact Clubs in Springfield Township Raise Money for Orphan Project

May 3, 2011 by Tim Ernst Leave a Comment

The Springfield Township High School Interact Club and Phil-Mont Christian Academy’s Interact Club held a very successful fundraiser on Saturday April 30, which benefited the Nyaka Aids Orphan Project and School in Uganda. The dinner event and silent auction raised a little over $2,500 which will be used to provide supplies and uniforms to children who want to go to school, but do not have the financial means to do so. The Director “Jackson” told the audience the story of “The Pencil” and how it is the only thing needed to bring success to the life of a child … a simple, single pencil in the instrument that can and does break the chain of poverty and illiteracy.
Highlights of the evening included The Phil-Mont Choir and the Springfield Sweethearts entertaining a crowd of roughly 100 people with their beautiful voices. Twesigye “Jackson” Kaguri, the founder of the orphanage and author of The Price of Stones – click the following to watch his Time Magazine interview and learn more about his work – as Mr. Kaguir was also recently interviewed by TIME magazine.

Clare Strenger, Director of Developement at Gwynedd Mercy High School (a former Springfield Rotarian) and Barbara Kroberger, Director of Social Services at Dock Woods Retirement Community (wife of Springfield Rotarian, Jeff Kroberger, Esq.) visited the Nyaka School in the 2006/2007 Rotary Year. While in Uganda, their mission was to educate teachers on how to provide social service and behavioral programs to and for the children. The children who have lost at least one parent, if not both parents are not always equipped to deal emotionally with the loss while at the same time trying to stay focused on their school work. The tools and programs Clare and Barbara shared brought a helping hand. Both Ms. Strenger and Mrs. Kroberger were thrilled that the Interact Clubs choose this cause to support were in attendance at the April 30th event.

Interact students and the Interact advisors worked tirelessly behind the scenes for weeks to make this event a huge success. The Interact Advisors include: Mr. Thomas Vizza, Springfield High School Keystone Technology Integrator and Mrs. Gail Frey, Spanish Teacher. STHS Board: Rehema Korich, President; Carrie Quaco, VP; Maya Sabin; Treasurer, and Anna Morrow, Secretary. Phil-Mont Board: Stefan Johnson, President; Jennifer Khoo, VP; Claar Ennis, Treasurer, and Victoria Glover, Secretary.

A special thank you was extended to our Rotary Club and Oreland Evangelical Presbyterian Church where the event was held. This event would not be possible without the support and donations from the following community businesses and leaders – for this we say THANK YOU!
