Rotary Pitches In for Baseball

On Tuesday March 20, The Springfield Township Rotary club presented Pitch In For Baseball’s Executive Director David Rhode and Board Member and Rotarian Bill Piszek with a check for $2,500. Pitch In For Baseball collects and gives baseball equipment and other assistance to young people in underserved communities around the world. For more information: www.pitchinforbaseball.org.
New Member Rev. Carol Ficken Inducted into Club
The Rotary Club of Springfield Township is pleased to announce the induction of our newest Member Rev. Carol Ficken of Grace Lutheran Church in Wyndmoor. Rotarians embody the spirit of their motto “Service Above Self” and undertake numerous projects locally and internationally. Charter Member Rotary Bell Returns to Springfield Club
“Oh if that bell could talk,” stated Rotarian Frank Duff on examining a brass bell at a the Club’s Board meeting. The bell was recently returned to the club, no one had seen it since the late 1950s or early sixties when it was created to honor the Charter Members of the Rotary Club of Springfield Township. The club was chartered in 1957.
Where the bell has been and how it came to be back in the club’s possession is an interesting story. Using the Contact Our Rotary Club link on this website, Anna Maye Sigel an Inactive member of the Hancock, MD Rotary Club, reached out to ask if we’d be interested in getting a brass bell with the names of our Charter Members back? Club President Roseann Nyiri answered Anna Maye and said she’d love to get the bell back. It seems Anna Maye’s brother frequents yard sales and flea markets found the bell. When he saw it was “Rotarian” he passed it along to his sister. She did some research and narrowed it down to our club. Anna Maye went out of her way to package up the bell and ship it from Walfordsburg, PA to Roseann. Anna Maye may be inactive, but she’s truly a Rotarian at heart. Thank you Anna Maye!
The Bell lists all the Charter Members of the Springfield Rotary Club. As of October 2011, Walter S. King and Robert L. Mohr remain the only living Charter Members of our Club.

District Governor Visits Springfield Rotary

Rotary International (RI) has been a major partner in eradicating Polio worldwide. In 1985, when Polio was infecting over 1000 children per day, Rotary International set a goal to eradicate this childhood disease. RI’s goal to end Polio is almost realized. After immunizing 2 billion children worldwide, RI and the Springfield Township Rotary Club continue to make a difference by supporting this cause… soon Polio will no longer be a threat to any child on our planet! The Springfield Township Rotary Club was proud to present a check for $2500 to the visiting District Governor for this effort.
Changeover Night 2011
The 2011 Edition of Changeover Night was held June 14, 2011 at the Sandy Run Country Club as a celebration to honor our outgoing and incoming officers of the Rotary Club of Springfield Township. It was a night of laughter, fellowship and a few tears as we remembered several members who passed away over the last Rotary Year, including Tom Timoney and John Brady.
Jeff Kroberger emceed the evening and Mick Kelly, a bag piper from The Philadelphia Emerald Society Pipe Band added a touch of the “old country” for outgoing President Jack Norrie. The new Board was welcomed in for the new Rotary year and incoming President Roseann Nyiri presented Colleen Robinson (below) of the Springfield Community Foundation with the 2011 Citizenship Award.
Board Member and Rotary Foundation Chair: Maureen McGettigan then explained the Paul Harris Fellow awards and that the club saw fit to award three in 2011.
Walt Long (Presented by Mandy Helwig) – for his tireless work internationally with the Water Tower in Tanzania and his consistent support of the club locally.
Carol Getz (Presented by Rosann Nyiri) – for her continued “mothering” of the club, planning fun fellowship events and continued support and planning of events such as Changeover Night and Charter Night.
Tim Ernst (Presented by Teresa Buzniak) – for his support of Rotary projects through technology, running the email notification system for Bingo, Fruit Sale and other events and using his talents to revamp the club’s website.
Jack Norrie, as outgoing president, made his presentation of $5,000 to Shelter Box USA, one of his goals of his presidency to Allan Syphers, a Blue Bell Rotarian and District 7430 Shelter Box Representative. The money will be used to purchase five shelter boxes that the club can track in the future and help those in need of shelter, food and water around the world.

Jack also made his President’s awards to several club members who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty to keep the club running smoothly. George Schaefer was recognized for his commitment to a successful Fruit Sale. Janine Corbett (pictured above with Jack) was cited for her excellence as Program Chair. Mandy Helwig and Teresa Buzniak were awarded respectfully Rotary Secretary of the Decade and Rotary Treasurer of the Decade Awards.
Jeff Kroberger had the crowd in stitches as he turned the tables on outgoing president, Jack Norrie and administered his own trivia quiz complete with “wiener” references and ended with a stirring tribute to Jack’s Scottish and University of Edinburgh roots with a reading of Robert Burns’ My Heart’s in the Highlands while the evening’s piper played Amazing Grace.
Roseann Nyiri then presented Jack with the past president’s pin and gavel and Jack then made the presentation of the President’s Pin to Roseann. Roseann then concluded the festivities with her vision for the next Rotary year that will fall within the Rotary International theme of “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.”

Join your neighbors and fellow Township residents in celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. First, attend the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration at 9:00 a.m. on January 17 in the Springfield High School Auditorium.
This event includes the presentation of the community service award to Dr. Roseann Nyiri. Then make it a “Day On” by participating in a service project. There are multiple ways to get involved. Roseann is the third Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Springfield Township to receive this honor, the other two are Teresa Buzniak and Dan Helwig. We congratulate Roseann and are proud of our members being recognized for the important community service they are doing day in and day out.
