Interact Clubs Changeover at Recent Springfield Twp. Rotary Club Meeting
Springfield Township Rotary Club honored officers and members of their two Interact Clubs. Springfield is unique in having more than one Interact Club, one each from Philmont Christian Academy and Springfield Township HS. Interact stands for International Service. There are more than 200,000 youth involved in Interact in more that 10,000 Clubs and 109 Countries. These students have accomplished many local humanitarian accomplishments this year as well. After an induction of the new leadership of each Club, the Interact Advisors revealed the recipients of the Service Above Self Awards to the deserving Interactors that stood out this year.

Joy Zwicker Receives Rotary International Recognition
Springfield Township Rotary Club is very proud to announce that one of their own has received International Recognition. Rotarian Joy Zwicker, who has been with the Springfield Rotary Club since 1996, has always been an important member of the Club. She has served as President, Treasurer, and as an Assistant District Governor. On Tuesday, March 25th, the Rotary welcomed current District Governor Frank Romano, Assistant District Governor Bruce Dearnley, and Past District Governor Tony Jannetta. Joy Zwicker was surprised with being awarded Rotary International’s Avenues of Service Citation for Individual Rotarians. The award recognizes that the strength of the Rotary ideal is founded on the service carried out by club members worldwide, and this citation provides a means for Rotary Clubs to personally recognize a member for outstanding efforts in the five Avenues of Service. The Avenues include; Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and New Generations Service. Zwicker was also awarded her third Paul Harris Fellow. The Paul Harris Fellow is awarded to honor Rotarians for generous contributions to The Rotary Foundation which are essential to securing and growing Rotary programs throughout the world. Clubs can also recognize Rotarians to express their gratitude for members individual commitment. Pictured Left to Right: Past District Governor Tony Jannetta and Rotarian Joy Zwicker. Day of Service Brings Out Community and Rotarians the Honor MLK, Jr.
The Rotary Club of Springfield Township inspired others to lend a hand in honor of Martin Luther King and a national day of service to others. The Rotary ran a two fold campaign using mostly Facebook to spread the word. The first part of the fundraiser was to collect toiletry items for the “Washeteria” at Face to Face Shelter in Germantown. The “Washeteria” allows people to come in and shower and wash their clothing in a dignified manner. Most of the participants are homeless war veterans. Numerous donations poured into Dan Helwig Realtors in Flourtown who offered to be a drop off location on behalf of Rotary. Tthe Springfield Democrats picked up on the news feed and held their own collection to contribute. All in all, thru Rotary and the combined efforts and donations of others who found out about the fundraiser on Facebook, 2000 Toiletries were collected and donated. The second half of the project was to collect money to pay for 200 meals on MLK Day at Face to Face. When last years restaurant vendor bowed out due to increased costs of chicken, Sandy Run Country Club stepped up. Mike Creeden, Manager at Sandy Run, was able to get most of the vegetables and chicken donated for free and his staff at Sandy Run prepared the 200 meals at no cost. Because of Sandy Run’s generosity there is a surplus of over $750 which will be donated to Face to Face as a monetary contribution to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the facility. On MLK Day, Rotarians and other volunteers served 200 grateful people at Face to Face who enjoyed an amazing and nutritious meal. Though MLK Day comes but once a year, Rotarians keep service in their hearts all year long living by and spreading their motto “service above self”. The community recognized their Facebook call to actions and the response was nothing less than extraordinary.
